JACKSON, MISSOURI!


The city of Jackson, Missouri is the county seat of Cape Girardeau county. Jackson is located in southeast Missouri about 10 miles from the Mississippi river. Cape Girardeau county is located about 100 miles south of St. Louis. The city was named in honor of General Andrew Jackson when the news of the battle of New Orleans reached the area in February of 1815. The city has grown to a population of 12,000.



The oldest structure in town is the rock house located at 119 North Madison street. The house was built in 1814-15. The house is constructed of stone from a quarry north of town near Hubble creek. The walls are 22 inches thick. The house is still well kept and is still in good condition.

 



The city of Jackson is mainly made up of residential housing and small businesses. The large industries are generally outside of the city limits. The largest employer in the area is Proctor and Gamble. The city also has 2 golf courses, 3 city parks and the Iron Mountain steam train.




The Jackson R-II school system includes the city and a large portion of the surrounding area which totals 283.43 square miles. The school system has about 4000 students in the district. The district and the city has been growing steadily and is an excellent area to live in. The school district is the 14th largest district in the state.
