HISTORY OF THE PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE

CHARLES H. DAUES
1905 - 1906

Charles H. Daues, the eighth prosecuting attorney, was born in Cape Girardeau on July 24, 1878, the son of a cooper. He attended parochial schools and graduated from Cape Girardeau Normal School and from Washington University law school in 1900. He was elected city attorney and later prosecuting attorney. As prosecutor, he strictly enforced the liquor laws and closed the saloons on Sundays. He was defeated in a bid for reelection and "declaring that he would leave town, that he did not want to live where people did not want to abide by the laws," he moved to St. Louis to become an Assistant U.S. District Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri. Later, he served as City Counselor of the City of St. Louis and was elected to the St. Louis Court of Appeals, becoming its Presiding Judge. He retired to private law practice in St. Louis and died October 6, 1938.
