EPC Super Monopoly

History of the Game

In 1934, Charles B. Darrow of Germantown, Pennsylvania, presented a game called MONOPOLY to the executives of Parker Brothers. Mr. Darrow, like many other Americans, was unemployed at the time and often played this game to amuse himself and pass the time. It was the game’s exciting promise of fame and fortune that prompted Darrow to initially produce this game on his own.

With help from a friend who was a printer, Darrow sold 5,000 sets of the MONOPOLY game to a Philadelphia department store. As the demand for the game grew, Darrow could not keep up with the orders and arranged for Parker Brothers to take over the game.

Since 1935 when Parker Brothers acquired the rights to the game, it has become the leading proprietary game not only in the United States but throughout the Western World. As of the 60th Anniversary year in 1995, the game is published under license in 43 countries, and in 26 languages; in addition, the U.S. Spanish edition is sold in another 11 countries.

Rules of Play

Object… The object of the game is to become the wealthiest and most knowledgeable church family through buying, renting and selling property as well as answering school and religious related questions.

Equipment… The equipment consists of a board, 2 dice, tokens, 32 houses and 12 hotels. There are Not By Chance and Community of the Chosen cards, a Title Deed card for each property and play money.

Preparation… Place the board on a table. Place the Not by Chance and Community of the Chosen cards on their allotted spaces on the board. Each family chooses one token to represent them while traveling around the board.

Unlike the home game of Monopoly, church families are issued no money at the beginning of the game. All money must be earned throughout the course of the game which will be described later in the rules.

Banker/Game Master/Auctioneer… Mr. Antoine will act as Banker, Game Master and Auctioneer. His rulings on all game matters are final. Besides the Bank’s money, the Bank holds the Title Deed cards and houses and hotels prior to purchase and use by the church families.

The bank pays out when necessary. It sells and auctions properties and hands out their proper Title Deed cards; it sells houses and hotels to the players and loans money when required on mortgages.

The Bank collects all loans and interest and the price of all properties which it sells and auctions.

The Bank never "goes broke." The game bank should not be confused with the property "People’s Bank" which is a property that can be bought and sold and has its own nuances described later in the rules.

The Play… Each family in turn throws the dice. The family with the highest total starts the play: Place your token on the corner marked "GO," throw the two dice and move your token in the either direction the number of spaces indicated on the dice. That’s right in this monopoly game you may go in either direction but once you choose a direction you must stay in that direction for the entire game unless otherwise told to do so. After the first church family has completed their turn, the turn passes to the family with the next highest die roll. If there was a tie in the initial roll, those church families should roll again breaking the tie.

The tokens remain on the spaces occupied and proceed from that point on the family’s next turn. Two or more tokens may rest on the same space at the same time.

According to the space your token reaches, you may be entitled to buy real estate or other properties-or be obliged to pay rent, pay taxes, draw a Not By Chance or Community of the Chosen card, "Go to Detention," answer a school or religious question etc.

If you throw doubles, you move your token as usual, the sum of the two dice, and are subject to any privileges or penalties pertaining to the space on which you land. Retaining the dice, throw again and move you’re token as before. If you throw doubles three consecutive times, move your token immediately to the space marked "Detention" (see DETENTION).

GO… Each time a family’s token lands on or passes over GO, whether by throw of the dice or by drawing a card, the banker may pay them a $200 salary. But before the family can collect they must answer a school related question from the Game Master. This question can be discussed by the entire team with the exception of the Staff Captain. If a correct answer is given the family receives $200. If the answer is incorrect the team does not collect the $200 and play resumes.

The $200 is paid only once each time around the board. However, if you pass GO on the throw of the dice and land on the Community of the Chosen, or on Not by Chance, and you draw an "Advance to Go" card, you then are asked another question by the Game Master and if correct would collect an additional $200.

Buying Property… Whenever a church family lands on an unowned property they may buy that property from the bank at its printed price. The family (Staff Captain) receives the Title Deed card showing ownership; place it face up in front of your family.

If you do not wish to buy the property, the Banker sells it at auction to the highest bidder. The family pays to the bank the amount of the bid in cash and receives the Title Deed card for that property. Any family, including the one who declined the option of buying it at the printed price, may bid. Bidding starts at a price preset by the Auctioneer.

Paying Rent… When a family lands on a property owned by another family, the owner collects rent from the family in accordance with the list printed on its Title Deed card.

If the property is mortgaged, no rent can be collected. When a property is mortgaged, its Title Deed card is placed face down in front of the family.

It is an advantage to hold all Title Deed cards in a color group (i.e., Tower Rock and Wittenburg, or K & L Repair and Farrar) because the family may charge double rent for unimproved properties in that color-group. This rule applies to unmortgaged properties even if another property in that color group is mortgaged.

It is even more advantageous to have houses or hotels on properties because rents are much higher than for unimproved properties.

The owner may not collect the rent if he/she fails to ask for it before the next family following throws the dice.

"Not By Chance" and Community of the Chosen" Cards… When a family lands on either of these spaces, take the top card from the deck indicated, follow the instructions and return the card face down to the bottom of the deck.

The "Forgiveness" Card is held until used and then returned to the bottom of the deck. The "Forgiveness" Card allows the family out of detention on their next turn. If the family who draws it does not wish to use it, they may sell it, at any time, to another family at a price agreeable to both.

The "Repentance" Card is held until used and returned to the bottom of the deck. The "Repentance" Card allows the families another chance on a missed answer to any question. If the family who draws it does not wish to use it, they may sell it, at any time, to another family at a price agreeable to both.

Detention… You land in Detention when… 1) your token lands on the space marked "Go to Detention"; 2) you draw a card marked "Go to detention"; or 3) you throw doubles three times in succession.

When you are sent to detention you cannot collect your $200 salary in that move since, regardless of where your token is on the board, you must move it directly into Detention. Your turn ends when you are sent to Detention.

If you are not to "sent" to Detention but in the ordinary course of play land on that space, you are "Just Visiting," you incur no penalty, and you move ahead in the usual manner your next turn.

You get out of Detention by… 1) throwing doubles on any of your next three turns; if you succeed in doing this you immediately move forward the number of spaces shown by your doubles throw; even though you had thrown doubles, you do not take another turn; 2) using the "Forgiveness" Card if you have it; 3) purchasing the "Forgiveness" Card from another family and playing it; 4) paying a fine of $50 before you roll the dice on either of your next two turns.

If you don’t throw doubles by your third turn, you must pay the $50 fine. You then get out of Detention and immediately move forward the number of spaces shown by your throw.

When you are in Detention, you may not buy or sell property, buy or sell houses or hotels but you may collect rent.

Free Parking… A family landing on this place receives any money that has been placed in the middle of the board. Money placed in the middle of the board includes fines from Detention and other fees or costs associated with the Not by Chance and Community of the Chosen cards. This space is also a resting place for the family.

Houses… When you own all the properties in a color-group you may buy houses from the Bank and erect them on those properties.

If you buy one house, you may put it on any one of those properties. The next house you buy must be erected on one of the unimproved properties of this or any other complete color-group you may own.

The price you must pay to the Bank for each house is shown on your Title Deed card for the property on which you erect the house.

The owner still collects double rent from an opponent who lands on unimproved properties of his/her complete color-group.

You must build evenly and can only build houses on your family’s turn. You cannot erect more than one house on any one property of any one color-group until you have built one house on every property of that group. You may then begin on the second row of houses, and so on, up to a limit of four houses to a property. For example, you cannot build three houses on one property if you have only one house on another property of that group.

As you build evenly, you must also break down evenly if you sell houses back to the Bank (see Selling Property).

Hotels… When you have the four houses on each property of a complete color-group, you may buy a hotel from the Bank and erect it on any property of the color-group. You return the four houses from that property to the Bank and pay the price for the hotel as shown on the Title Deed card. You may erect only one hotel on any one property.

Building Shortages… When the Bank has no houses or hotels to sell, families wishing to build must wait for another family to turn back or to sell their houses/hotels to the Bank before building. If there are a limited number of houses and hotels available and two or more families wish to buy more than the bank has, the houses or hotels must be sold at auction to the highest bidder.

Selling Property… Unimproved properties and utilities (but not buildings, churches or schools) may be sold to any family as a private transaction for any amount the owner can get. However, no property can be sold to another family if buildings are standing on any properties of that color-group. Any buildings so located must be sold back to the Bank before the owner can sell any property of that color-group.

Houses and hotels may be sold back to the Bank at any time for one half the prices paid for them. All houses on one color-group must be sold one by one, evenly, in reverse of the manner in which they were erected.

All hotels on one color-group may be sold at once. Or they may be sold one house at a time (one hotel equals five houses), evenly, in reverse manner of which they were erected.

Mortgages… Unimproved properties can be mortgaged through the Bank at any time. Before an improved property can be mortgaged, all the buildings on all properties of its color-group must be sold back to the Bank at half price. The mortgage value is printed on each Title Deed card.

No rent can be collected on mortgaged properties or utilities, but rent can be collected on unmortgaged properties in the same group. Churches and schools may not be mortgaged.

In order to lift the mortgage, the owner must pay the Bank the amount of the mortgage plus 10% interest. When all the properties of a color-group are no longer mortgaged, the owner may begin to buy back houses at full price.

The family who mortgages property retains possession of it and no other families may secure it by lifting the mortgage from the Bank. However, the owner may sell this mortgaged property to another family at any agreed price. If you are the new owner, you may lift the mortgage at once if you wish by paying off the mortgage plus 10% interest to the Bank. If the mortgage is not lifted at once, you must pay the Bank 10% interest when you buy the property and if you lift the mortgage later you must pay the Bank an additional 10% interest as well as the amount of the mortgage.

Bankruptcy… A family is declared bankrupt if they owe more than they can pay either to another family or to the Bank. If your debt is to another family, you must turn over to that family all that you have of value and retire from the game. In making this settlement, if you own houses or hotels, you must return these to the Bank in exchange for money to the extent of one-half the amount paid for them and this cash is given to the creditor. If you have mortgaged property you also turn this property over to your creditor but the new owner must at once pay the Bank the amount of interest on the loan, which is 10% of the value of the property. The new owner who does this may then, at their option, pay the principal or hold the property until some later turn, then lift the mortgage. If the family holds the property in this way until a later turn, they must pay the interest again upon lifting the mortgage.

Should you owe the Bank, instead of another player, more than you can pay (because of taxes or penalties) even by selling off buildings and mortgaging property, you must turn over all assets to the Bank. In this case, the Bank holds these properties until bought again. A bankrupt family must immediately retire from the game. The last family left in the game wins or the if there are multiple families left then their assets are added up including cash, mortgage values of properties, houses and hotels which are valued at half price.

Money can only be loaned to a family by the Bank and then only by mortgaging property. No family may borrow from or lend money to another family.

Paying Rent on a Utility… If you throw dice and land on Schaefer Water Centers or Citizens Electric and another family owns them, don’t touch the dice. See what the total is. Multiply that number by 4 if your opponent only owns one utility or by 10 if they own both of them.

Paying Rent on a Fully Owned Property Group… Suppose your opponent owns a complete color-group-for example, all three reds-with no buildings on any of them. If you land on one of the reds, you have to pay double its rent. But suppose one of the reds-e.g. Brazeau Hall- is mortgaged. You land on Hemman Winery; it is unmortgaged. How much rent do you pay? Double; even though Brazeau Hall is mortgaged, your opponent still owns it.

Using a Mortgaged Property to Pay a Debt… If you own money to any of your opponents, you can offer them a piece of mortgaged property to cover all or part of your debt. Your opponent has the option of deciding whether or not to accept it. If you opponent accepts, they must immediately pay 10% of the mortgaged value to the Bank.

Etiquette… If you see an opponent land on another family’s property and the owner doesn’t notice, it is in your best interest to say nothing. However, if you pass GO and the Banker doesn’t notice, it’s obviously in your best interest to speak up and collect your $200. If a family fails to ask for their rent before the next family has rolled the dice then they forfeit that rent. However, a fair amount of time must be given to all families before the next turn begins.

Staff Captains… Each church family is assigned a Staff Captain. These players oversee their family’s activities in the game and outside the game as it pertains to the game. Staff Captains also can contribute using Scrip and the Thrivent Gift Matching Program but cannot assist in any of the answers needed during the game when the family lands on a church or a school or when the family is asked any questions.

Staff Captains also must truthfully report to the Game Master whether their family has completed any tasks given to them from the Community of the Chosen or Not by Chance cards in the prior week. Staff Captains may not reward their own church family members with money. They can only give money to other family members and must do so in the Christian spirit of the game. They can alert the Game Master to good acts or bad acts by their own church family and the Game Master can then reward or penalize those members if he so chooses.

Earning Money… Church families can earn money in several different ways: 1) Good Grades on their report card. Each letter grade of "A" on a family member’s report card earns them $5. These include all subjects including Physical Education, Computer and Art Class. 2) Unprovoked Acts of Kindness. Church Family members who use manners, etiquette, help others etc. may be rewarded by Staff Captains or the Game Master. The amount of the reward is up to the discretion of the Staff Captain or Game Master. However, Staff Captains and the Game Master can also penalize a team and fine them any amount if they deem necessary for poor conduct, sportsmanship etc. 3) Salem Scrip. Church Families can earn money by the money their parents and staff captains spend using Salem Scrip. Each time a parent or Staff Captain spends money using Scrip their children/family earns 10% of the Scrip purchase. For example, if the Dix family buys $200 of Scrip on Thursday, August 19 both Grant and Garrett’s church family would earn $20. Scrip must be paid for in full before a church family is given their 10% and when this is so the church family receives the money the next game date. If more than one member of a family is on a church family team then each member of the family is given 10%. So, if Grant and Garrett are on the same Church family their team would receive $40 in the example given above. 4) Accelerated Reader Program. Each full point a student earns in the Accelerated program will earn their church family a dollar. Students are advised not to read books in an irresponsible manner so as to jeopardize their other schoolwork or hinder teachers or staff in any way. Points will be tabulated each Monday and those points earned from the previous week will earn a dollar per point for each family. Only points earned will be used not points attempted and all partial points will be rounded down. 5) Thrivent Gift-Matching program. Church Families can earn money by the money their parents and staff captains spend using the Thrivent Gift-Matching Program. Each time a parent or Staff Captain spends money using the gift-matching program their children/family earns 10% of that amount. For example, if the Barber family makes a $200 gift on Thursday, August 19 both Rebecca and Kendall’s church family would earn $20. The gift must be verified before a church family is given their 10% and when this is so the church family receives the money the next game date. If more than one member of a family is on a church family team then each member of the family is given 10%. So, if Rebecca and Kendall are on the same Church family their team would receive $40 in the example given above.

Special Board Places

People’s Bank… People’s Bank is a bank unto itself in the game. It does not lend money or hold any property within the game. However, the church family that owns People’s Bank does earn 5% interest on its cash assets each time it lands on the Bank. For example if a church family owns People’s bank and lands on it and they have $1000 in cash in their treasury they would immediately receive $50 in cash. The family must land on the Bank to receive the interest and People’s bank must not be mortgaged at this time. If it is mortgaged and the family lands on it they cannot collect. In addition to this any other church family who lands on the bank not only pays rent marked on the Title Deed card but also pays interest to the church family who owns the bank in the amount of 2% of their cash assets. So, if a church family lands on People’s Bank and it is owned by another family and the family who landed on the bank has $1600 in cash assets they would pay the family who owns People’s Bank $32. If People’s Bank is mortgaged at the time another family lands on it they pay no interest to the family who owns it. This makes People’s Bank an extremely valuable property.

Schools… Schools cannot be owned by any church family. If a family lands on a school each member of the church family will then be asked a question relating to school. Each family member must answer for him or herself and no consulting is allowed between family members. These questions will vary and might include math, geography, music, current events, or any other subject pertaining to education. Each question the family gets correct they receive $10. If the family answers every question correct they receive an additional $50. For each question missed the family must pay $10 and half of that money is placed in the middle of the board. Questions will be given in a K-8 format with the lowest grade going first and so on.

Churches… If a family lands on a church square and it is unowned they then enter that church and answer a question relating to religion. If the family answers correctly they are then given the keys to the church and they are considered the congregation of that church. Each time another family lands on that church they must answer a religious related question. If they are correct they pay no tithe to the church family. If they are incorrect they must pay a tithe as stated on the Church Title Deed card. For example, if Church Family 1 has correctly answered a question and is running the Trinity Lutheran Church and another family lands on the square and answers incorrectly they would then pay church family 1 $25.

If Church Family 1 is running two churches at the time the family who incorrectly answered the question would pay $50. Church family members may consult with each other before answering the question but only one person may answer and the first answer given will be the one accepted. All questions in the game will be administered by the Game Master and his rulings are final. If the church family who entered the church answered the question correctly the keys of that church are handed over to the new family. They then hold the Title Deed card of said church and reap the benefits of that church.

Miscellaneous

A vanilla "church family" envelope will be placed on the board for each church family. These will be marked and all money and Title Deed cards will be placed inside the envelopes when play is not in session. No one is to open or otherwise touch these envelopes unless instructed by a Staff Captain or the Game Master. If someone is seen tampering with these envelopes or any other part of the game board their church family will be fined $100 the following game date and they will lose their first turn on that game date as well. The Game Master will monitor all monetary transactions relating to the game so no team should worry about money or property being taken from their envelopes.

There will be two games during each school year with the first game beginning on or about the first week of school and ending on or about the last day before Christmas vacation. While church family teams will remain constant for the second game all property and money will be turned in and a new game will commence on or about the first week back from Christmas vacation. This game will end on or about the last day of school. The last family remaining is the winner of each game or if there are more than one family left the one with the most assets including cash and property win the game.

Church families should follow all rules pertaining to the game but should not let the game in any way interfere with their other schoolwork or disrupt any other student or staff member. Students should not do anything in excess because of the game including reading books only to achieve money for the game or doing other acts that could harm or disrupt regular school activity. The Game Master and or Staff Captains can at anytime suspend a family member from the game for any conduct they feel detrimental to school or the game.

Finally, the game is meant to be fun and educational. While competition is encouraged it should be done in the spirit of the game and adhere to all school and Christian values. Players who violate this rule can be suspended from the game for an indeterminate amount of time. No one should let the game be any more than it is-a game.

Please contact a Staff Captain or the Game Master with any questions or ideas regarding the game.
