Welcome:
At Zion, you'll find a warm country welcome, and an invitation to get to know us better as we all come to know Jesus Christ better. There's a family feeling here, a feeling of caring and acceptance that is genuine, and is born in our realtionship with Jesus Christ. We are a great place for your family to grow in Christian Discipleship and serve God in our world. With easy access from Cape Girardeau and Jackson, the country church atmosphere is available to all. Surrounded by farms, Zion has been and always will be part of this strong rural community. As new homes sprout up where corn and bean fields used to dominate, new families have come to enjoy this traditional church. Join us for Worship soon! Our Mission:
History:
Founded in 1848, by German immigrants, Zion United Methodist Church has served the Gordonville area and surronding community for over 150 years. Situated on a hill west of the town of Gordonville, the church steeple may be seen for miles. The present santuary (built in 1876 and added to in 1892) was renovated 1998, and the orginal pipe organ was renovated in 2001. Since we were outgrowing our Education building (built in 1964) we started planning for a new building in 2002. The Disciple Center was completed this summer, with lobby, meeting rooms, and a larger fellowship hall and kitchen. Consecration of the building will be October 16. Zion has been a strong church for many years and will continue to make disciples for Jesus for generations to come. |
Programs:
Zion has always had a strong Sunday School. Classes are offered for all age groups, from the youngest to the young at heart. We have a variety of Adult Classes, so you're sure to find one that's right for you. Sunday School begins at 9:15 each Sunday. Music is also an important part of Zion. Our excellent Chancel Choir sings at our 10:30 service. Additionally many talented people provide special music for the 8:00 service. Youth and Children sing in worship at times throught the year. Worship is central to our life together. Each Sunday at 8:00 and 10:30 we gather for a traditional, yet informal, service. There is a time expecially set aside for our children. Communion is celebrated the first Sunday of each month, and open to all. Zion's Youth program is exciting. In addition to a strong youth Sunday School, our youth gather regularly for fun, service, fellowship, and learning. Events include our annual hay-ride, a fish fry, Christmas program, and Easter Sunrise service. United Methodist Women meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30. United Methodist Men meet throught the year, some Tuesday evenings and some Saturday mornings, for programs and service projects. Lenten Services - Each Wednesday evening during Lent we have special worships services with guest speakers and musicians. The Lenten season ends with Maundy Thursday Communion service. Our Memorial Day Supper is a highlight of the year. Chicken and Dumplings are served to hundreds of satisified customers each year. Christmas marks a most unique tradiltion for Zion. Each year we offer a Christmas Program on Christmas Night, December 25. Children through Adults are represented in the program, and the entire community gathers to celebrate Christmas together this special night. Zion supports the Jackson Ministral Alliance Food Pantry, through donations of food items, money and volunteer hours. We are also strong supporters of the Festival of Sharing, which provides many different necessities to agencies that distrubute them to needy families. |
