| For those of us who think life is too short to learn HTML, there
are very easy tools built into newer versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape which make
creating webpages incredibly simple. These instructions work with Windows 95/98,
using Internet Explorer's tool - Front Page Express. Netscape's Composer is similar.
|
Create a space on your computer to store
your pages.
Use "My Computer" or "Windows Explorer" to create a folder on your
hard drive. It's best to give it a simple name like "homepage". Save
ALL of your webpages and images in this folder. Do not use sub-folders.
|
|
Start a page.
The easiest way to start is to "borrow" a simple page and modify it. Here is a simple starter page with a date stamp, counter, link to
Show-Me Net, and background. Members interested in creating a homepage for their
community can find start pages at http://www.showme.net/comdir.htm
Purists can start from scratch by clicking on "File" and
"New".
|
|
Save your first page as the file index.htm
Save this page to your homepage folder by clicking on "File", "Save
as", and the "As File" button. Browse until your homepage folder is
in the "Save in" area. Change the file name to index.htm
in lower case letters. Click "Save". Now you can disconnect
from Show-Me Net to work on your page.
|
|
Modify text
Now the fun begins. Just type or backspace to add or replace text. Change the
look of text by highlighting it and clicking on one of the icons on the toolbar near the
top.
|
|
Add images
Adding images is a 2 step process:
1) Save an image to your homepage folder. If the image is on the web, just
RIGHT click on it and choose "Save Picture As...". Or, use Windows
Explorer or My Computer to copy an image to your homepage folder.
2) Create a link to the image. On your webpage, move your cursor to the
location for the image. Then, click "Insert"and "Image", browse
to your homepage folder, click on the image file, and click the "Open" button.
|
|
Add more pages
Just create another page and save it to your homepage folder as anything except index.htm , for example hobbies.htm
Files should have a .htm or .html
suffix.
|
|
Link to your pages
Linking to other pages is a 3 step process.
1) To simplify things, open both pages in Front Page Express. You may use the
blue arrows to move between pages.
2) On your first page, highlight the text which you want to use as a link.
3) Click on "Insert" and "Hyperlink", and "Open
Pages". Highlight your new page and click "OK".
