FTP - File Transfer

Wish you could download software at top speed?  Try the WS_FTP available at our office.
It's a file manager, with your hard drive contents on the left of screen, and an FTP server on the right. Several sites are already built into the program, but you can easily add more.
Your browser will load files at about 6 KBPS, max. If you find an FTP site for the file, you could easily see a download speed much higher, using FTP.
Your browser will sometimes take you to an FTP site for a download. Note the (URL) address, complete with subdirectories, as best you can. Then open FTP, and find the same address. We'll almost guarantee you can save download time.
For instance, you could download Netscape Communicator this way:
Click to open WS_FTP.
Choose your download directory in the left side of the program. Click on the arrow to go "up" one step in the directory structure.
Enter Netscape in the profile name.
Enter ftp5.netscape.com in the host name.
Choose Automatic Detect for the host type.
Click an X in anonymous user box to the right of User ID box. User ID is anonymous
Enter your e-mail address as password.
Leave account blank.
Click OK, and connect.
Enter /pub and then /communicator by clicking.
Choose the program you want to download, and double-click on it. It will copy from the right screen to a your hard drive, to the download directory you've chosen on the left side of the screen.
If you don't have WS-FTP LE, you can obtain a copy at our office.
FTP is also the way you "post" your home page to the Show-Me Net server.  However, you must first send an e-mail to helpdesk@showme.net and request that we "unlock" your homepage space.  This is now necessary due to security upgrades in the server software.
Open the program, click CONNECT button in lower left. Type ftp.showme.net on second line-"host name and address". Your user ID is your Show-Me Net user name withOUT the "@showme.net". Add your Show-Me Net password. (This is a separate log-in, even though you are connected to Show-Me Net, already.) The right-hand directory will find your personal directory on our server. You must MKDIR - make a subdirectory, called public_html (lower case). Put all of your web page material inside the public_html subdirectory.Your starting page must be named index.html or index.htm.
Tell your friends they can see your personal home page at http://www.showme.net/~youruserid/.
