7/5/01 Help Desk Warning: This week, several members called to report they can't connect and get an error message saying there is no dial tone. The recent lightning storms "fried" their modems. They did not have a surge protector on the phone line. These inexpensive devices are a necessity this time of year. We urge our members to add a surge protector to their phone line, or, at least unplug it from the computer during lightning storms. |

6/14/01 NEWS - KFVS, Channel 12, recently aired a report about Internet Service Providers who use customers' computers for "distributed computation." Some Internet Service Providers (e.g. Juno) have been tapping into subscribers' computers and selling their computing ability. Several members have asked if Show-Me Net does this. The answer is "NO!" Show-Me Net is a non-profit corporation supported by $100 per year membership fees. There are no other charges. It does not advertise. It does not sell member assets or information. It DOES provide good Internet access, e-mail, and space for member homepages on its server. |
