Post 3838, two Scout Masters have served nearly 50% in the position of Scout Master with a combined 21 years of service.  The two Scout Masters are Bill Wickham with 9 years of service and Jerry Hampton with 12 years of service.

Troop 5 History:

Boy Scouts of America Troop #5 was started in 1930.  The first charter stated: “Application for charter for new troop”.  The date on the original charter was December 1, 1930.  Sponsors on the charter were: Third Street Methodist Church and Red Star Baptist Church.  The name, address and telephone number of the first Troop 5 Scout Master was listed as follows:

Mr. H.B. Newman

102 N. Henderson

Cape Girardeau, Missouri

Telephone: 1836

Mr. Newman was a manager for Missouri Utilities.  Other members of the Troop Committee were J.C. Cole, J.F. Gastain, P.R. Brooks, and W.E. Hicks.  Scout Troop 5 members listed on the charter of 1930 were: Howard Cobb, Tom Cotner, James DeBoe, Otis Langston, Claude Row, James Row, Ray Watson, and Howard Woodall.  Troop 5 started in 1930 with 8 scouts and 3 adult leaders.  Troop 5 has grown in its long history in Cape Girardeau to a Boy Scout Troop of nearly 60 scouts and nearly 20 adult leaders, continually producing Eagle Scouts on a regular basis and boasting to be “THE FINEST SCOUT TROOP IN THIS PART OF THE COUNTRY!” The proof is in the number of young men that we continue to reach and develop into leaders, both in Scouting and in life.  Troop 5 has produced over 120 Eagle Scouts since 1954.  In January 2001, Troop 5 boasted a record number of Eagles Scouts at the District Court of Honor with _______ .  In our February 2001 Troop 5 Court of Honor, we once again set a “new” Troop 5 record
